Tips and tricks for children’s magicians

I have so much advice to give to magicians and entertainers for making your shows and events the best success and to get the most laughs and the least stress. I have a new YouTube magic channel where I am going to be uploading lots of videos packed full of wisdom/rantings.

School Magic Shows

Really trying to get more work in schools. If any of you can recommend me to your children’s primary school/pre-school/nursery, that would be great.

Primary school magic shows, nursery magic shows, pre-school magic shows with children's entertainer Ritchie Rosson

Fun-filled 1-hour magic shows are brilliant fun for 3-10-year-olds and for the lovely teachers too! Shows for a single class or up to 250 children. I can do up to 4 shows in a day. Magic, music, bubbles, dancing, volunteers, comedy, and loads, and loads of laughs!

The Ritchie Rosson Podcast!

Episode 1 with my great friend Michael Wo. Michael is a great friend and he taught me to do first balloon modelling and then magic. We meet every fortnight and share jokes and magic ideas. We share a similar life outlook and crazy sense of humous.

I am a massive podcast fan. My favourites are Real Time with Bill Maher and The Mick Wall Podcast but I find most podcasts way too waffly. Sometimes when they are friends they go off on dull topics. I wanted mine to have a little editing. Actually a ridiculous amount of editing to keep my own attention and hopefully my audience. It took me about 16 hours to edit this. I am hoping for at least 1 view per hour of editing. I have high hopes!

Magic of the Linking Rings

Love playing with these in my magic shows. I had time during the lockdowns to learn lots of new magic. I learnt a lot from the wonderful magician Jeff McBride’s tapes on the subject from the 1980s(?) and the brilliant Levent’s 3 dvd set where he goes into incredible detail about the history of how they have been performed and the techniques used to amuse.

Parties Starting Soon?!

I know I am a fool! But I am getting quietly optimistic that we could be back at parties soon. I do hope so because it’s how I make a living! Rishi Sunak’s grants for self employed have ticked me along; I’ve ended up earning about 1/3 my usual income in the last year and obviously my diary for the year ahead is empty.

I have been volunteering recently at a vaccination centre in London and just WOW! It’s run brilliantly and the lovely other volunteers I work with make it a pleaure to be standing in a freezing car park directing cars and pointing people to the right path. I’m pretty star struck at the tea making zone to rub shoulders with the awesome NHS staff. What a time it has been for them it has been and how amazing they are.

I do not know what will happen in coming months and have really become numb to the good and bad news, but I need to be ready to go and up for a party because turning up full of enegy with a big smile on my face is what I am paid for. So I am working hard learning new magic tricks, writing jokes and getting fit. And boy has the last year given me material to write about!

For now, it’s not party time, so keep wearing your mask. Follow the guidelines and get a vaccine as soon as you are offered one! I’ve had my first dose and looking forward to the second one.

What do you think? When will you be having parties again?

Oh, PS I made a new showreel video of what I do. It’s pretty crazy and good fun.

What’s in your magic case?!

It’s what all the kids want to know and all the magicians too. Who isn’t curious about all the nonsense that goes into a magicians case. I love the grand magic shows with immense sets behind curtains but there’s something special about the magician who walks into to any kind of room with a suitcase of nonsense, plonks it on a table and has a room full of people amazed and maybe laughing.

I love doing shows for kids. They have a great sense of wonder and a brilliant sense for comedy and daftness. But if your room is half full of adults which it usually is in British birthday parties, then why not try to entertain the whole room?

This video was enjoyable for me as I spent a great time going through not just my dusty props (from months of having no gigs thanks to Covid) but through so many photos and videos of my performances and even me playing around at home and with friends where a lot of tricks can get shaped and played with.
