I work entertaining with magic shows, dancing, party games at children’s birthday parties and school shows and people often ask me this question. I do have ADHD and have a natural liveliness and a desire to be physical and expressive. I have a YouTube about ADHD I called it “Lets go Lets go Baby!” And this is part of it; this positive self talk to get you into that high energy, high fun mindset. I am not dancing and being crazy all week. A lot of my business is doing emails, editing music, prepping props but on show days and even the day before I am beginning that process of psyching myself up.
I like to be well rested so I may go for dinner but will get an early night the day before a show, I’ll be up early, sometimes work out and be very fresh. Singing on the journey there help me a lot to get into that fun, high energy frame of mind. In your normal life a great tip is do not start the day with news like having the radio on a news channel. This is a major downer to get the day going. I wonder if I have a low blood sugar problem as I need to graze through the day and have snacks like nuts, bananas, dates, dark chocolate and the odd naughy bar like a Crunchie but I never buy a multipack as then I will binge on them!
Had these for about 10 years and only use them about 2 days a year but they are a must! Stop yourself hitting the deck and breaking yourself.

I have tried entertaining at birthday parties for this age range, but they start to get cool and serious and don’t appreciate my silly fun. Some children’s entertainers will just take the cash and turn up to any part,y but I want my clients to be super happy and so keep my parties for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th birthdays for maximum laughs and great memories.

Avoid big, echoey halls as they are terrible for a children’s birthday party. Especially if are having entertainment like a magician. Every sound bounces around the room; children shouting, laughing, music, and adults talking; creating a headache-inducing ball of noise. Even many jokes are missed as you cannot hear what is said. So therefore less laughs, less fun. Your guests will have their fingers in their ears.
Look for venues with a car park for yourself and your guests. Small village halls and church halls are great. Home parties are great too. For parties at home, I recommend inviting no more than 15 children. For halls, around 30 is a good number.
Avoid town center venues as they are tough for guests to park in.
Check that the venue has a kitchen and if you wish to serve alcohol to the grown-ups, check they don’t have a “no alcohol” policy.
Booking 30 minutes before and after the party is possible to set up/pack down, but an hour each side of the party times (especially before the party) is best for you. Book the hall for a two-hour party for four hours if you can. Ask a few friends/family to help with setting up/packing away to move chairs, etc. 2 hours is the ideal length for a children’s birthday party.
Book your entertainer such as Ritchie Rosson (me!), before you book the hall. There are loads of halls around but only one Ritchie! “Oh no, you are booked already? Can you cancel the other party?” Sorry, no!
